Kidjo promises fun and consciousness Print E-mail

The record labels call it world music. We call it get-down, chill-out and love-your-life music. Call it what you want: Angelique Kidjo is worth listening to. The four-time Grammy nominee is opening for Josh Groban.

We caught up with her by phone when she was in Connecticut earlier this month. Some snippets:

On the S.A. show: “It will be like a huge party. Lots of joy and lots of fun and lots of consciousness. They will be entertained. That's what we are here for.”

On touring: “The schedule looks crazy. We're touring everywhere. I love being onstage, out in public, letting the magic of music work its way through everybody.”

On recording her upcoming album “Djin Djin,” which drops May 1: “It was fun. I had fun with the musicians in the studio. We had a real feeling, a real energy.”

Who's sharing space on the album? Alicia Keys, Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel, Ziggy Marley, Branford Marsalis, Amdou and Mariam and Kidjo's friend, Joss Stone, who happened to be recording at the Electric Lady Studio in New York the same time as Kidjo.
