Music profile: DJ Jester won't laugh in the face of Foreigner Print E-mail

The sound: DJ Jester uses the hip hop DJ technique — he scratches and layers samples on top of one another — but he samples records no other DJ would: Willie Nelson, George Strait and “Puff the Magic Dragon” over rap and hip-hop beats. His quirky act has taken him around the world on tours with Grand Buffet, Of Montreal and Lederhosen Lucil.

His gear: Two Technics 1200 turntables, a Rane TTM 56 mixer and Shure needles

His words: “I'm not trying to be ironic,” said DJ Jester, a.k.a. Mike Pendon. “A lot of DJs are trying to be ironic, like, ‘I'm mixing this country record with this hip hop record. That is ironic. That is cool.' My music is honest. I love these songs that I play. They could be, like, the cheesiest songs. They could be, like, Foreigner. They could be these '80s songs you're embarrassed to listen to, but I'll come out and say, ‘I love these songs.' There are so many records out there, why limit yourself?”

His records: “River Walk Riots” (2000); “Introducing the Neat Beat” as part of Genuine Electric Latin Love Machine (2002); “Heavily Booted” (2003); “Table for One” with Quad Rod (2004); “Live from the Short Attention Span Theater Tour” with Kid Koala (2004); “Secret Love” (2006)

Where to see him: He'll be closing out SXSW in Austin for the third year in a row with a party at Emo's. One of a handful of San Antonio acts at the massive festival, Jester will perform alone and with Grand Buffet. He also appears with Theory of Everything every First Friday at Holden's 101 in Southtown.

The 210 take: The Fist is one of the coolest turntablists in S.A. — although he won't admit it — and has made a name for himself outside Texas, too, because he loves to have fun and knows how to pump up a crowd. You never know what he's going to mix into the show; sometimes it's Neutral Milk Hotel, sometimes it's Simple Minds, sometimes it's candy out of a bag. But it's always tasty.
