Chris: Bust out the funny suits; it's time to chase some monsters Print E-mail

Take one man and combine him with a moustache, the likes of which any '70s porn star would die for, a space-age jumpsuit and a bunch of mole men that “hate freedom,” and you have one of the funniest new shows airing on the godhead that is Adult Swim.

“Saul of the Mole Men” began airing earlier this month, and it just might be the greatest action-adventure show airing Sundays.

Not impressed yet? Well then, you must be a communist, or at the very least a terrorist.

If you think I am trying too hard, well baby, this column just got started.

“Saul of the Mole Men,” is a throwback to the day when cartoons were interspersed with shows featuring puppets and grown men in funny suits running around badly designed TV sets chasing after the monster of the week.

Airing at 11 p.m. (according to TV Week) Sunday nights, the show is nestled nicely between “Tim and Eric's Awesome Show, Great Job” and “Moral Orel.”

Show creator Craig Lewis has gone beyond absurd and funny with “Saul of the Mole Men.”

The show follows the adventures of geologist Saul Malone, one of the lone surviving members of a STRATA team sent to the center of the Earth. Along with Robot and British pop star Johnny Tambourine, they must discover the secrets of the mysterious and lewd Mole Men.

From the moment you start watching, several things immediately pop into your head.

1. “H.R. Pufnstuf.”

2. “Land of the Lost.”

3. Lewis, you magnificent bastard you!

And 4. Stop bogarting the water pipe that is for the use of tobacco products only and not illegal substances.

You may also pause to think, damn, this show looks so simple I could do this!

Time to put the water pipe down, Waldo, because while “Saul of the Mole Men” may seem like it was thrown together, it's simplistic style is deceiving. It takes a master craftsman of funny to produce and pull off its many odd and humorous moments.

From the writing and music to the acting and non sequitur scripting, “Saul of the Mole Men” is as relieving and joyous as the words herpes test and negative.
