Working quickly and impulsively. “I'm extremely impatient,” said David Algarin III, which is why acrylic paints are one of his favorite media — they dry fast. “I don't try to go with a plan at all. I just jump in.”

Valdez and Rubio's two-man homage to their hometown, “San Anto: Pride of the Southside/En El Mero Hueso,” runs through March 23 at Museo Alameda. If you're in L.A., go catch a performance by Valdez's world music/rock band, Ollin, in which Valdez plays trumpet.

A Kansas native, Allen studied architecture at the University of Kansas before transferring to the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri, where he received a BFA in photography.

For the upcoming exhibit “I got you(r) back,” Courtenay Martin and Myriam Lanau spent a year creating artworks in response to assignments they gave each other every two months.

In addition to selling some of his work to generate income, Bob Rules works a number of odd jobs and plans on one day turning his passion into a full-time career.

Zivadinovic graduated in May from UTSA with a bachelor's degree in art and pays the bills with freelance Web design work.

Mendez explores color, human cognition and the connection between the personal and the universal with brightly colored grids evoking cellular growth.

“It's kind of like Aesop's fables or children's stories like that, that seem nice but when you think about it, Hansel and Gretel are going to get eaten by a witch,” said Tracy.

“My interests in portraiture is in exploring the physical and psychological boundaries of the body and how that relates to nature and the environment."

He's known for large-scale abstract sculptures primarily in steel and bronze. Some works are minimalist, created from raw metal. Works in his latest series, “Blooms,” are assemblages of pieces of metal he's found in scrap yards; the resulting sculpture has an organic feel.

BEST KNOWN FOR: “Three-dimensional paintings in which I incorporate Happy Meal toys and thread and tapestry and hair and dirt and every single object you could possibly think of to put in a painting," said Dayna De Hoyos.
