Getting a raise is nice. Getting a bigger raise is nicer.  This year I tacked an additional 3 percent onto my salary — on top of what my boss agreed to give me. I didn't even have to negotiate for the extra boost. All I had to do was cut a deal with myself to save a portion of my income.
