Gambling guru Chuck Blount joins Dustin this month for Ball and Chain.
DC: The Super Bowl was Sunday, and I thought it would be the perfect time to have you in the studio to talk about sports and their significance. I ran across this column on pointsincase.com, and this guy was explaining why sports are so important to men, especially. He pretty much argued that sports are pretty straightforward, and you either win or lose, or you play well or you play bad, and it’s not like art or other complicated “abstract experiences.”
CB: It could be if you were looking at it from a really academic stance or something. But the way I look at it is the reason it’s so popular, if you really get into (sports), you really have to invest in your team and everything about the team that there is to know. ..... I think the reason people get so big on championships or when (teams) really fall flat on their faces is because then that investment either pays off or it doesn’t.
DC: You and I are both old quarterbacks. Do you ever watch a game and get the feeling that “Sh*t, I could do that?”
CB: No, no, because, like, mentally, when you watch the game, you see the mistakes they made and this and that, but those guys are so good. I mean, the worst team in the NFL would crush the best team in the colleges. ..... But yeah, sometimes you’re like, “Man, I could have made that pass,” and stuff like that. But I think overall, you can’t be delusional to think that you really could pull it off. Those guys are there for a reason.
DC: Well, I’m waiting for Al Davis to call from the Raiders because I really think JaMarcus Russell needs a veteran to show him the ropes and bring him to the next level, and I think a couple of guys like me and you could do that.
CB: Boy, I think you’re the man for that job.
DC: Moving on, aside from our alcohol dependencies, why does beer go so well with this equation? Why don’t we get drunk and scream at paintings at the museum. Like, “Come on, a**hole! Cubism is so last century!”
CB: Maybe (alcohol) just kind of lubricates it a little bit to where you get more into it. But yeah, it does, it mixes unbelievably well. I’ll easily knock back a six-pack during maybe the first half of a game if you really want to test me.
DC: On the other hand, do we really need sports for a reason to drink?
CB: No.
DC: No. But it makes for a good excuse
CB: It sure does.
