WHAT: Sally's Happy Hut
WHERE: 1902 West Ave.
THE DIGITS: (210) 737-7788
WEB: Nah
GET YOUR DRINK ON: Afternoon (3-ish — this seems somewhat flexible) to 2 a.m. seven days a week. Happy hour is from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. That's a lot of happy hutting.
HOTTIES QUOTIENT: Not when I was there, and I doubt it really attracts the chicks. That's not really a priority in my barhopping. Plus, it's nice and dark, so that has to up the hotties quotient to some extent. And it does have DJs on Fridays and Saturdays, so perhaps you'll see someone in a nice pair of jeans and halter top.
WALLET HANGOVER: Slim. Domestics cost just $1.50 during happy hour and 25 cents more the rest of the time while Corona is $3 and a little less during happy hour. The selection is pretty slim, too, but that'll keep your money in your wallet anyway.
THE 210 TAKE: I knew that anyplace called Sally's Happy Hut had to be stellar. I mean, Sally and Happy and Hut. And when I went in, Sally was behind the bar, smoking. She's a no-nonsense kind of gal. She told a story wherein she followed a cop and reported him for using his cell phone while driving. The new bartender was friendly, as was a fellow bar stool occupant. I think a bar is really known on a Monday afternoon (anyone can go on a Friday, but Monday afternoon, well, speaks to the real flies — the bread and butter of the bar world), and this one was going over brilliantly. It is a hut: small and dark and cool. And happy: We had some good laughs and talked sports. Sally soon turned to a video screen for some games, and I looked around. A dozen tables, two electronic dart boards, a fancy new jukebox and a pool table. Yup, all the amenities of a happy hut.
GRADE: A- (smoking permitted)
