GET YOUR DRINK ON: This is one of those serious ice houses: 10 a.m.-2 a.m. Monday-Saturday; noon-midnight Sunday

HOTTIES QUOTIENT: Really not much of an issue here. This is an older crowd, generally, with a few tourists here and there. There are lots of couples and groups of friends, which means everybody's friendly, but taken. That's the way I like my bars: nothing to distract me from my icy beer. The times I've been there, there has been quite a bit of cleavage, but it's not something you'd want to ogle. Though I did see one hottie (must have been a tourist) wearing gold lamé-like Roman sandals.

WALLET HANGOVER: Slim. They have a special Monday through Thursday: a bucket of seven domestics for $10 (that's less than a dollar and a half apiece). The regular prices are good, too. Imports/premiums are only $2.50 and domestics are $1.75.

THE 210 TAKE: Right on the banks of the new River Walk extension, this old house, mostly still in its original 1904 form, is a fantastic place to stop in for hours on end and drink. And now you can take a jaunt down the stairs to the River Walk and get a water taxi to take you through downtown, no driving necessary (provided you live just north or south). The oldest VFW post in Texas has great outdoor seating and lots of rooms to wander through and drink in. There are old photos on the walls and a shrine to POWs. It also has to be the only bar in Texas to have more fireplaces than TVs. Stained glass adorns more than a few windows on the first floor, and the chandeliers add a sense of past aristocracy in only the way a Texas bar can. The DJ on the weekend plays lots of Tejano and some classic rock, and there are fundraisers with offerings of hot dogs as well as a guy selling taquitos. I can't find a single thing not to like about this place. Thank you, veterans and South Texas.
