What: Acapulco Drive-Inn
Where: 609 S. Alamo St.
The digits: (210) 224-2452
Web site: Yeah, right.
Get your drink on: Any time they're open. I love the simplicity here: Open Wednesday through Friday 4 p.m. to midnight, and Saturday 4 p.m. till 1 a.m. Period. Though they only have beer, there's a variety, including Pacifico and Land Shark. There's even a bowl of limes.
Wallet hangover: Low. Be more concerned about the amount you'll drink because of the prices. Domestics and 16-ounce cans are $2, while imports are $3. And the extra-nice part is that when you start feeling woozy from all the beer and your empty stomach (that “I-came-straight-from-work-and-am-on-my-second-beer-and-it's-only-5:30” feeling), have some inexpensive but delicious enchiladas at the little cantina. And another beer.
Hotties quotient: Well, if you haven't yet been turned on by the prices and the food factor, this is probably not the place for you. This is a place to hang out and talk, not so much to pick up women (or men). So, let's subtract the sex factor and multiply by beer. Never mind — try it, you'll like it.
210 take: This is a family run business. The mother owns the place, and the son was outgoing, friendly and quick-witted. Even the tabletops are homemade: Bottlecaps are arranged into designs over which a glaze is applied, creating a one-of-a-kind beer holder. Its open patio (covered by a long, wide awning that runs out to the sidewalk) is welcoming and comfortably breezy. The outside jukebox is filled with Tejano and rock. South Alamo Street runs out in front like a river, above which the top of the tower hovers like a South Texas UFO. And don't miss the First Friday classic car show. This is puro San Anto.
